Not flying your plane can be very expensive.
One of our customers recently purchased a plane that had flown
about 4 hours per year for the previous 4 years. During the first oil
change we found metal in the oil filter which is to be expected after
sitting for so long and isn't really a problem if it does not show up
in subsequent inspections. Unfortunately there was still a lot of metal
at the second oil change so we pulled some cylinders to inspect the
camshaft. Sure enough, at least one of the cam lobes was pitted. The
engine is now off the plane being torn down and fully inspected. The
bill for this work will be somewhere around $14K depending on what
other parts need to be replaced other than the camshaft and lifters.
Don't let this happen to you!
- Fly it
- Have someone else fly it for you
- Lease it back to a flying school (such as Magnum Aviation)
- Admit you are not going to fly it and pickle the engine
